Y2K is one of the most-played aesthetics in browser styling games and one of the most consistently misbuilt. The clothing half is easy to recognise — low-rise denim, crop tops, mini skirts, shiny synthetic fabrics, coloured jeans in shades nobody manufactures any more. The half that gets skipped is the finish.
Early-2000s makeup was shiny. Lip gloss rather than matte lipstick, shimmer on the eyelid rather than a flat wash, and a glossy sheen on the skin instead of the powdered finish that came later. A period-correct outfit above a modern matte face reads as a costume of the era rather than the era itself, and it is the single most common mistake in this category.
The second thing worth knowing is that Y2K was not one look. Skater-girl styling, with its ripped jeans and plain tees, ran at the same time as the glam version with the coloured low-rise denim and the crop tops — and they used opposite proportions. Borrowing from both in one outfit produces something that belongs to neither decade nor subculture.
Accessories are where the era is most fun and most specific: tiny shoulder bags, butterfly clips, layered chokers, tinted sunglasses. They are also where restraint stops applying — the period was maximalist, and one accessory too few reads as understyled.
